regionally extinct 

but locally protected

The humphead wrasse Cheilinus undulatus (also called Maori or Napoleon wrasse)  is under heavy fishing pressure on a global basis and is one of the first marine animals to be  included on the IUCN Red Data List as vulnerable to extinction.  

 

There is still much that we do not know about the humphead wrasse. In order to effectively protect the species and help its populations recover, some of the main questions that need to be addressed are:
